Spotlight: Hunter UAV

drone quadcopter

The Hunter is an unmanned aerial vehicle used by the U.S. Army to gather intelligence and target enemy forces. This combat-proven drone has been in service since 1995. Its Republic of Macedonia deployment was its first operational deployment. Over four thousand hours were flown by the Hunter during its 7-month-long operational period. The Hunter's remarkable operational success in Kosovo led it to be re-instated into production. It was also deployed into Iraq where it was used to fight ISIS with Viper Strike munitions.

MQ-5B Hunter

The MQ-5B Hunter, an upgraded version of the MQ-5, is the MQ-5B Hunter. The aircraft features a twin tailboom design, heavy fuel engines, and weapons-capable high points. The MQ-5B Hunter has a gross take-off weight of 1800 pounds and is capable of flying at an altitude of 22,000 feet. The MQ-5B Hunter can carry out missions lasting up to 15 hours. This aircraft is capable of carrying two Viper Strike guided explosions. It can also be controlled by Hunter aircraft via a relay mode. It is also capable of carrying two Viper Strike guided bombs. This makes it ideal to use for scouting missions.

The MQ-5B Hunter's UAV avionics are among the best in DoD. It includes a PC based mission computer, an APU (auxiliary power distribution unit), GPS units and a Litton RN-251 inertial navigator system. Its advanced Avionics system reduces its weight, size, power consumption, and size. It can carry out multiple missions at once.

RQ-5A Endurance Hunter E-Hunter

The Endurance Hunter (E-Hunter), is a tactical, unmanned aerial vehicle. Its first flight took place on March 17, 2005. This aircraft is a collaboration between Northrop Grumman & the US Army. Its mission is to extend the endurance, payload capacity and range of the Hunter UAV. It will be offered as a field-installable kit. Currently there are 50 Endurance Hunter RQ-5As.

The Hunter can carry Northrop Grumman's BAT Submunition. This submunition has been used to destroy an MBT combat vehicle as well as incapacitate a T-72 tank. The Hunter was also able to successfully carry the Viper Strike precision munition. It has a 1.8kg (4lb) warhead as well as a semi-active laser seekers. It is a fixed-wing, twin-rudder aircraft. It has a six-hour endurance rating. The aircraft can also fly more than 100 hours. Two Passaggio Guzzi petrol engines of 60hp each propel the RQ-5A.

Army One System ground control station

The Army is moving towards a universal ground control system that can be used to manage unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). For complete aerial coverage on the battlefield, you can now buy hundreds of low-cost, high-performance UAVs made by many manufacturers. However, each UAV is unique, with a unique controller, vehicle, receiver, and screen. Army began a new program called One System to address this problem. One System ground control is one step in this direction. This Spotlight article will examine the concept of One System and its current reach as well as future technology initiatives.

The One System platform was initially designed for the RQ-7 Shadow TUAS from Textron. It can now support multiple UAVs, including Northrop Grumman RQ-5 Hunter. It supports the RQ-2 Pioneer, AAI's Aerosonde and the RQ-8 Fire Scout UAV helicopter. Both the One System ground station and ground control stations run on Windows or Sun Solaris systems. They communicate using an analog datalink, directional antenna and an analog datalink.

Viper Strike anti-armor munitions integration

Northrop Grumman has awarded a contract to purchase multiple GBU44/E Viper Strike antiarmor armed unmanned aircraft vehicles. These munitions can be fitted to KC-130J Harvest Hawks. To increase its effectiveness against time-sensitive enemies, the latest software load will be used. Viper Strike can be used as a GPS-assisted laser-guided variant to the BAT munition.

The Viper Strike antiarmor armament can provide precision, stand-off strike. It uses a GPS-aided GPS navigation system and semiactive laser seeker for precise strikes and low collateral damage. It has proven effective against a variety of targets and is a viable option for a future Hunter UAV.
