How To

How to Fly Drones at a Beginning Level

A drone refers to a remote-controlled aircraft designed for aerial photography, surveillance and scientific research. Drone technology has been around since World War II. DJI's Phantom quadcopters became commercially available in 2010. There have been many types of drones since then, including beginner-friendly drones like the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 and professional-grade multi-rotor crafts like the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many methods to fly a Drone, including

  1. Remote control – This technique uses a control device attached directly to your hands that allows you steer the drone around its flight path. There are two main types: Joysticks (like a radio), and On/Off switches (like an alarm clock).
  2. Manual Control – This allows remote operation of the drone via GPS coordinates using a smartphone application. You will need to keep track of where the drone is going and follow the directions from the app.
  3. Autonomous Flight – This is when the drone handles all the piloting tasks. It allows the drone to fly independently without any human intervention. The drone must be equipped with a camera and sensors that can capture images and data in order to fly autonomously.
  4. Triggered Flight: This is similar in concept to manual control. The pilot manually creates a route and the drone then follows it until it reaches that endpoint. The drone automatically lands once the route has been completed and returns to the base.
  5. Landing Gear – Some drones are equipped with landing gear, which allows them to safely land if they lose power during flight.
  6. Goggles – Pilots often wear goggles while flying to keep themselves safe from any debris.
  7. Camera - Some drones can be equipped with cameras which enable you to capture photos from the sky.
  8. Obstacles – Some drones have obstacle avoidance systems that stop them from colliding with obstacles.
  9. Speed – Some drones can reach speeds in excess of 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life: Most drones have a battery life of between 20 and 30 minutes depending on how many power sources you use.
  11. Range - Some drones can travel upto 30 miles depending on their models.
  12. Power source: Some drones will require an external power source while others can be powered by internal batteries.
  13. Weight – Some drones are less than one pound, while other models can be up to four pounds.
  14. Size - Drones range from small devices that fit in one's palm to large crafts that weigh more than 50 pounds.
  15. Price - All drones fall within a specific price range, from high-end models that can cost thousands of dollars to lower-cost options starting at $100.
