Drones and ISIS Combat

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. Drones are more accessible to Ukrainians who are used to older equipment such as trucks. Drones are easy to use by soldiers, as they do not require pilots. Drones have a similar interface to video games, making them easy to use.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military uses unique tactics to defeat ISIS in the east: octocopters fitted with thermal cameras that can carry out nighttime missions. Some drones can be fitted with antitank weapons and can even light up columns. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began life as an IT enthusiast team. Now, Aerorozvidka operates as a military aircraft reconnaissance unit. The first mission of the organization was to operate a drone company. But, over time, it became a fully-fledged unit, with its own head. Due to export restrictions, the Ukrainian government prohibited Russian military aircraft entry into Ukraine. Aerorozvidka depends on crowdfunding and donations to keep the company afloat, as many of the drone components are made in the USA.

Switchblade

The U.S. military is supplying Ukraine with armed "Switchblade" drones, which are able to strike Russian tanks from miles away. The US Air Force developed these unmanned aerial vehicles in response to Ukrainian needs. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby, more than 121 of these machines are being dispatched to Ukraine. It is unclear how the Switchblades will work in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The Switchblade drone is small and easy to launch from a tube. It has a range 40 km. The Switchblade is able to hit a Russian convoy 6 miles away, which is unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft can set up quickly in a conflict like Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly much faster than the Bayraktar (current U.S. ally).

Russian kamikaze drones

The US has recently announced a $800million military aid package for Ukraine. One part of that package includes the delivery to Ukraine of 121 unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts," which will terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft are designed for flying over areas for up to thirty to forty minutes and come equipped with warheads, cameras, and other equipment. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These small, lightweight aircrafts are equipped with a powerful, low-flying gimbal, allowing them to operate from air, land, or sea. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability will likely be key to Ukraine's military, as it can easily break Russian sieges and attack command-and-control nodes. Even though such capabilities would pose a serious risk to both sides, Ukraine could win if it can use small drones to make a difference in battle.

U.S. drones left to loiter

Russia is now integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions in its military arsenal. These drones have the ability to use deadly loitering munition in the style of bazookas. This could lead to the proliferation these autonomous killing machines on black markets. This is something observers and pundits are concerned about. So what can America do to stop this happening?

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone weighs 5.5 pounds and can hover for up to thirty to forty minutes. It has a camera and small warhead. Its purpose is to destroy the opposition forces in Ukraine.
